the fourth miniature sheet closes the series dedicated to Czech zoological gardens. The four stamps again represent Bohemian and Moravian zoological gardens: Protivín Zoo, Vyškov Zoo, Hluboká Zoo and Liberec Zoo.
The four stamps are accompanied by four coupons, each depicting a highlight of the related zoo. The motifs further spread beyond the coupons into the margins of the miniature sheet.
1038 — The CZK 19 stamp commemorates Protivín Zoo. This Crocodile Zoo in South Bohemia is the most successful crocodile breeder in Europe specialising in critically endangered crocodile species. It is the only establishment in the world successful at breeding both most endangered crocodile species – the Philippine crocodile and the gharial.
1039 — The CZK 23 stamp dedicated to Vyškov Zoo portrays its emblematic species, the Ovis aries strepsiceros sheep with spiral-shaped horns, which has accompanied the zoo during its entire existence and was also a part of its initial logo. The coupon represents the Ankole-Watusi, a large breed of domestic cattle with unusually large horns, bred in South-East Africa. The horn span can be as large as 200 cm. Unlike the Asian zebu, the Ankole-Watusi does not have a hump.
1040 — The CZK 27 stamp dedicated to Hluboká Zoo portrays the zoo’s emblematic species, the river otter, accompanied by a pair of common spoonbills. The coupon depicts black-crowned night herons. The Hluboká nad Vltavou Zoo successfully and repeatedly bred and reintroduced both these endangered bird species. The zoo boasts a unique collection of exotic ant species.
1041 — The CZK 33 stamp dedicated to Liberec Zoo uses a motif of the golden takin, also known as Chinese takin, native to the Himalayan Mountains. Apart from two Japanese zoos, the Liberec Zoo is the only institution in the world boasting the animal. It is known worldwide for its success at breeding these even-toad ungulates. The coupon accompanying the Liberec Zoo stamp represents the Somali donkeys. The military conflicts and poaching in the homeland of this wild donkey species led to its probably total extinction. The Liberec Zoo has the largest herd of this most endangered odd-toed ungulate of the horse family in Europe.
The other species of our zoos are depicted in the coupons and in the margins of the sheet.
